PE AND SPORT PREMIUM FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Introduction

We believe that participation in sports can make a significant impact upon life outcomes for young people now and in the future.  Physical Education is a key driver at Seaburn Dene Primary School and we place a high value on the quality delivery of the PE curriculum; opportunities for individuals to take part in extended school clubs; competing in city wide tournaments and establishing links with sports clubs in the local community.

What is the Sport Premium?

The Government is providing additional funding of £320 million for the academic year 2022/2023 to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. Seaburn Dene received £17555 for the academic year 2022/2023. Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Since September 2013, schools have been held to account over how they spend their additional funding. Ofsted have strengthened the coverage of PE and sport within the Inspectors Handbook so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed. Schools are also required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website.

How are we using the funding to benefit our children?

At Seaburn Dene Primary we have allocated the funding in a number of ways:

  • Hiring qualified sports coaches to provide specialist teaching for children across the year groups
  • Recruiting and training a Community Sports Activator apprentice to help support and deliver high quality PE and games across the school day and with our wider school communiy.
  • Providing Sports-based mentoring through Kick to children.
  • Providing training to school staff through teaching alongside qualified sports coaches
  • Buying new resources to enable a wider variety of sports and activities to be delivered in PE lessons
  • Buying into specialised support to enable teachers to plan PE lessons more effectively
  • Purchasing resources and providing support to promote and encourage active play and lunch times
  • Professional development opportunities for the PE leader
  • Providing cover to release staff for professional development in PE and sport
  • Continuing to run sports activities in school and increasing pupils’ participation in the competitive sport, both in school and against other schools
  • Developing young sports leaders through the Play Leaders Programme at lunchtime
  • Creating and maintaining an intra-school sporting competition
