Introduction
At Seaburn Dene, we deliver a high-quality geography curriculum which inspires pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world. It therefore forms an important part of our curriculum and is taught individually as well as being incorporated across other areas of the curriculum such as English, history, art and dance.

The John Muir Award at Derwent Hill
The John Muir Award initiative encourages people to connect with, enjoy, and care for wild places.
Each year, our Y6 children complete a 5 day Explore course with the John Muir Award. The week is packed full of environmentally focused adventurous activities in and around the beautiful English Lake District World Heritage Site at Derwent Hill. The pupils (and staff) ‘discover' and ‘explor’ the local scenery:
- Gorge scrambling provides an exciting and immersive experience in a picturesque mountain stream
- Canoeing on Derwent Water gave a taste of journeying and adventure
- Hiking up the beautiful Lakeland fells exposed the pupils to some stunning scenery
Allowing everyone to truly appreciate the wilderness experience!
Pushing personal boundaries on the big swing, exploring underground in an historic mine, learning to navigate and read a map contributes to the extensive list of new challenges that the pupils faced, enhancing their understanding of real world geography and provided them with memories to build on and aspirations for the future.
