French

Introduction

Learning an additional language gives us an opportunity to look at the world differently. It breaks down barriers and encourages us to be more open minded. It helps us to communicate and to be more tolerant of others in a rapidly changing world. It also encourages aspirations to travel and broaden our horizons. At Seaburn Dene, we celebrate and welcome differences within our school community; this is reflected in our language lessons which embrace not only the language being taught, but also the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.

Curriculum Map: Year 3-6

Our French curriculum has been designed to engage our learners using topics which they will find interesting.

Jour Francophonie

Year 3 learned the finger rhyme 'Deux Petits Chatons' (Two Little Kittens). They also made finger puppets to recite the rhyme.

Home Learning

Children love to share their language learning at home. Encourage your child to sing you the songs we have been learning, count in French and tell you the new words they have been learning.

Here are some interesting websites and videos to enhance learning at school. We hope you enjoy them.

  • Little French House France is well-known for a love of all things food related. Meet Charles, a young boy who is bilingual and has great fun cooking typical French dishes with his family. You could try out some of the dishes yourselves. Bon Appétit!

  • Nattalingo Daily Challenges Nathalie Paris (yes that is her real name) describes herself as a 'Geordie French storyteller extraordinaire'. She has produced some wonderful daily challenges for families to attempt while schools are closed. This is a lovely way to encourage children to use French around the house. The adults can give it a try too.

  • Fun with French Phonics From year 3, children at Seaburn Dene learn French phonics to help them to read, write and say new words. These videos, produce by Sue Cave, are an excellent opportunity for this learning to be reinforced at home. They also give our children the chance to produce a creative piece of work which they will very much enjoy.

  • Fun French Calendar Use this interactive calendar to add the day, date and weather. We learn all of this useful vocabulary so this will be excellent practice for our children.
